What is Inflammatory Bowel Disease?

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is an ongoing inflammatory disease of the digestive tract that is generally classified into two types—Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. In both conditions, an abnormal immune response generally causes chronic inflammation of the intestines.

Crohn’s Disease: While Crohn’s disease can affect any area of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract from the mouth to the anus, it is most common in the small intestine and/or colon, and affects each layer of the digestive tract. The symptoms of Crohn’s disease typically include diarrhea with or without blood, abdominal pain, abdominal cramps, fever, weight loss, and joint, skin, and eye irritations.

Ulcerative Colitis: Ulcerative colitis affects only the innermost layer of the colon. Symptoms typically include diarrhea (which may be bloody), abdominal pain, and cramps.

Diagnostic Testing for IBD

Because the symptoms of IBD overlap with many different conditions, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis can be difficult to diagnose. Testing helps doctors accurately diagnose the type and severity of IBD in order to design the most effective treatment plan.

Patients with IBD can lead full, active, and productive lives when they follow their prescribed treatment programs. With recent advances in therapies, many patients experience long periods of remission with very few symptoms, if any.
